MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Architecture, in practice, has been one of the oldest professions of the human civilization. It serves one of the three basic needs of human beings. We learnt to shelter ourselves from predators, the vagaries of nature and also from enemies of our own kind. The initial effort went into defining a shelter for ourselves and then moved on to build with available resources as we learned how to mould various natural elements like clay, stone and lime and later with metals and alloys.

Today the professional activities encompass diverse areas of experties, including project management, material handling and research, environmental planning and conservation of physical and intangible heritage. The area of design activities have been extended into domains of product and industrial designs, virtual designing for the firm industries, communication designs and of course, include the traditional areas of housing, planning, interiors, landscape.

With this huge basket of oppertunities, the profession of architecture, including planning and design, has transcended unprecedented boundaries and I am sure, the students at the Manipal School of Architecture and Planning would be contributing significantly towards building a more sustainable future.
