Dr. Narayana Sabhahit completed his B. E. degree in Civil Engineering from the National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore in 1985 and obtained M.Tech and Ph.D. in the area of Geotechnical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. Dr. Sabhahit has over 34 years of experience in teaching, research, consultancy, and administration.
He started his academic career as a Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) in the year 1988. He served as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, MIT, Manipal, from 2004 to 2008. He served as the Joint Director and Officiating Director, at MIT, Manipal, from 2008 to 2011. His notable contributions are curriculum development for UG and PG Programs, starting the M.Tech program in Civil Engineering, implementation of ISO certification, and NBA accreditation for UG and PG programs in the department at MIT, Manipal.
Dr. Sabhahit was appointed as the Director of Admissions, at MAHE, from 2011 to 2015. During his tenure as Director of Admissions, he has immensely contributed to strengthening the admission processes. He has also coordinated B.Tech online common counseling for Manipal Group Institutions. He was appointed as the Registrar of MAHE, Manipal, in September 2015. During his tenure as the Registrar, he has exceptionally well-managed responsibilities entrusted to him. Along with other top leaders, he has successfully managed UGC Inspection, IOE Empowered Committee visits, NAAC peer team visits, etc. His leadership during difficult times including the pandemic period is highly appreciated.
His areas of interest include ground improvement techniques, optimum design of structures, earth reinforcement, and stability of slopes. He has published more than 25 technical papers in reputed international journals and conferences. He is the recipient of the prestigious Prof. Leonards Award for the best doctoral thesis submitted to Indian Universities in the year 1995. His paper entitled “Seismic Design of Semi-Gravity Reinforced Earth Wall” was awarded the best paper during the Indian Geotechnical Conference held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in December 2008. He has bestowed the incentive award for faculty research and scientific publication, instituted by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education during the year 2002-03.
Prof. Sabhahit is a reviewer for the Indian Geotechnical Journal. He has delivered invited lectures in seminars, short-term courses, and workshops. He is a life member of various professional societies like the Indian Geotechnical Society, the Indian Society for Technical Education, Institution of Engineers (IE), and a Fellow of the Indian Association of Structural Engineering.
