About the Department

Kasturba Medical College, Manipal situated in the south Indian state of Karnataka is affiliated to Manipal Academy of Higher Education (a Deemed University). The college commenced functioning in 1953 and recognition for the MBBS course was conferred by the Medical Council of India in 1958.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery came into existence under the leadership of the founding Head of the Department, Prof. Varghese Chacko in 1967. 

The department presently, has five units each headed by a Professor, who is assisted by three other faculty members. Thus, there are a total of twenty-five teaching staff members in the department. Each unit has its own area of special interest in Orthopaedics. General Orthopaedic conditions are dealt with by all units.

The Department of Orthopaedics at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, provides excellent patient care and outstanding education in Orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal medicine. The department is committed to advancing knowledge related to the management of musculoskeletal disorders through the sub-specialty units renowned at National and International levels. We focus on patient care in each of these Orthopaedic subspecialties: spine surgery including corrections of scoliosis, knee arthroscopy & sports medicine, complex trauma with foot-ankle, shoulder surgery, complex trauma surgery and joint replacement and pelviacetabular trauma. We have, in addition, rehabilitation support by full-fledged physiotherapy and occupational therapy services. The artificial limb center with an inbuilt workshop and manufacturing facility provides comprehensive orthotic and prosthetic appliances.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal (KH, Manipal) attached to the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal (KMC, Manipal) provides the clinical material required for undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and training programs. This tertiary referral hospital has a total number of 2,032 beds. Each unit is allotted 30 inpatient beds. 

KH, Manipal is an apex teaching hospital of the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal under the aegis of Manipal University.  Besides meeting the health demands of the western region comprising Goa, coastal Karnataka and Kerala, its health care network extends to the areas of interior Karnataka, primarily through its satellite hospitals as well as unique health care centres. Kasturba Hospital is recognized for treatment by Central and State Government, defence services and public sector companies. Kasturba Hospital is a 2032 bedded, speciality and super-speciality medical and surgical care centre.

The department of Orthopaedics is an integral part of the Trauma Triage. A team of residents from the respective units are posted in the trauma centre on their admission days.

The Artificial Limb Centre is managed by the department of Orthopaedics for the benefit the disabled persons among the local community, the Artificial Limb fitting Centre was started in July 1979. It was partially aided by ALIMCO, Kanpur to start with and provided free orthoses and prostheses for the disabled under the Government of India scheme. It is hailed as one of the best limb fitting centres in south India. It also provides teaching facility to the undergraduates and post-graduates of the medical college.

Dr. Kishore Mulpuri, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (MBBS Batch 1988 & MS Ortho Batch 1994 KMC, Manipal) is appointed as 76th President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Kishore Mulpuri is the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia, as well as a Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at BC Children’s Hospital. He completed his medical and orthopaedic training at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India, prior to pursuing orthopaedic fellowships at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, Australia, the Melbourne Orthopedic Group, and Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Mulpuri also completed a clinical research fellowship in orthopaedics at BC Children’s Hospital.
