Creative Teaching Learning Technique – “Think, Pair & Share”
September 06, 2023
The Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, MCON, Manipal, organized a modified objective structured clinical examination incorporating the “think, pair, and share” method on 31st August 2023. The concept was to test the students’ clinical knowledge, communication, and critical thinking skills.
Semester 1 B.Sc. Nursing students were divided into six groups of 15-20 members with a faculty advisor. The advisors prepared clinical scenarios based on their experiences relevant to student learning. The students were assigned to the OSCE station. Two students volunteered to lead, and the other volunteered to assist. The students read the scenario and paired and analyzed the scenario using their critical thinking skills. They decided on the process or clinical procedure to be demonstrated and followed the steps while simulating the patient’s environment, communicating, and assessing. The other student assessed if the steps were rightly followed and assisted. The faculty advisor observed the entire procedural skill without interfering with the student’s thinking process. Once the skill was completed, the faculty advisor had a constructive feedback session with the students. The group was rotated to all the stations, and different scenario-based cases were provided to ignite the students' thinking skills.
This method gave us an idea of how confidently the student could demonstrate the skill in real-life scenarios and what improvement in the teaching method the faculty advisor could do to improve the students. There was positive feedback from the students as well as the advisors. This method contributed to SDG 4, Quality Education.
