Report of World Diabetes Day 2023 Theme: Access to Diabetes care: Empowering Global Health

As part of World Diabetes Day 2023, the following activities were organized by Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal, spanning three days between November 15 and 17, 2023.
On November 15, 2023, the Department of Community Health Nursing and the final-year BSc Nursing students conducted a diabetic screening and awareness program for class IV workers of MAHE, Manipal, at MCON. A total of 62 participants were registered and screened for diabetes mellitus, and 11 people identified with increased random blood glucose were referred for further checkups. Health awareness on diabetes mellitus was also conducted between 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., and 48 participants attended the program. On November 16, 2023, the fifth-semester BSc Nursing students organized an awareness program between 11.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. at Government Higher Primary School (GHPS), Athrady, and presented a role play on the theme “Access to Diabetes Care," followed by a short quiz for the students of GHPS school. A total of 60 schoolchildren participated in the program. The activities were coordinated by Mrs. Jeyalakshmi K. and Mrs. Manjula, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Health Nursing, MCON MAHE, Manipal.
On November 17, 2023, the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing (MSN) and the 2nd year MSc Nursing students of the MSN speciality, along with Eye Tone and Lions Club Udupi Lakshya, conducted the ‘Diabetes Screening and Awareness Program’ at Udupi Mahila Grahakara Vividhoddesha Sahakari Sangha, Udupi district. A total of 55 people from the general public were screened, and 15 people with raised levels of random blood sugar were encouraged to go for further checkups. All the participants were made awareness of diabetes mellitus and the importance of lifestyle modifications in the management and prevention of diabetes. They were also screened for general health issues by a physician and underwent routine eye checkups by an optometrist. The program concluded at 1:00 pm and was coordinated by Dr Melita Sheilini, Assistant Professor-Selection grade under the guidance of Dr.Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor and Head, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, MCON. Overall, the program focused on SDG goal 3: Good health & well-being.
