World Suicide Prevention Day - 2015

“Preventing Suicide: Reaching out and Saving lives" was chosen to be this year theme. It signifies the need for focus on vulnerable population who are at risk for suicide. The theme also sensitize about giving due attention to the bereaved family members left behind. In order to generate awareness regarding this aspect The World Suicide Prevention Day 2015 was observed at Government Pre-University College Hiriadka on 10.09.2015 between 3.00 pm– 4.00 pm.

Suicide is one of the major public health issue. Impact of suicide often pose an emotional storm on the bereaved family and friends. Every year, 1 million people worldwide put an end to their lives by means of suicide. It is estimated that global annual suicide fatalities could rise to 1.5 million by 2020. Among the three leading causes of death in the World, suicide ranks third place. Attempts of suicide are 20 times more frequent than completed suicides. With a view to bring down the incidence of suicide, the international association for suicide prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) observe World Suicide Prevention day every year.  

Ms. Shalini, Assistant Professor Sr. Scale, Dept. of Psychiatric Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal addressed the gathering by introducing the theme of the day. She emphasized on various strategies to strengthen the lamenting closed ones of people committed suicide. In her speech, she has stressed on various coping strategies to face the stressors in life.According to her, youth have an important role in avoiding stigma and helping bereaved family.
Overall the programme was organized by the faculty, Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Manipal College of Nursing Manipal along with the II year Post Basic B.Sc Nursing students. The audience were 100 students of Government Pre-University College Hiriadka and their teachers.
 

The formal programme in Government Pre-University College Hiriadka started at 3.00 pm. A role-play based on the theme was enacted by the II year PBBSc (N) students which was well appreciated by all. Ms.Asha K Nayak, Assistant Professor-Sr.Scale, Dept. of Psychiatric Nursing, spoke on factors leading to suicide and its prevention. Mr.Shivanna -Senior Lecturer and Mr. Muralidhar Halambi, Lecturer, Pre-University Government College Hiriadka expressed their gratitude and appreciated the efforts taken by the faculty and students. Mr. Sangamesh, 2nd year PU student, expressed his views on importance of prevention of suicide among the youth and adolescents. Program ended at 4.10 pm with vote of thanks by Ms.Anitha, II year PBBSc (N) student.
