Report on Interprofessional Advanced wound care workshop

Manipal Centre for Interprofessional Advanced Wound Care organized two days hands-on workshop to equip MBBS and Nursing graduates and staff nurses of Kasturba Hospital on advanced wound care in collaboration with Coloplast India. Dr N C Sreekumar, Professor & Head Department of Plastic Surgery, KMC Manipal inaugurated the workshop as chief guest and addressed that, Health professionals must work together and nurses must lead the team when it comes to wound management as they truly care for the patient 24x7. Dr. Judith A Noronha, Dean, MCON welcomed the impressive gathering and enthused the students with the growing opportunities globally as wound managers. Dr Elsa Sanatombi Devi, Coordinator of the center narrated the growth of the center from its teething phase to being in the toddler phase. The center in future looks up to internal agencies’ accreditation so that MBBS and nursing graduates would take 3 credit courses as they go out into the world of health care practice.
Ms Effienia D Wahlang, PhD scholar ignited the first session on EBP on advanced wound care. Dr. Peralam Yegneswaran Prakash, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, KMC Manipal totally mesmerized the students with his humorous techniques of terming microbes and their impact on the healthcare arena and the burden on patients. Dr. Elsa Sanatombi Devi took the student’s attention through her skills of IP Debridement skills through improvisation. Students were totally engaged and they enjoyed the art of performing the debridement procedure as novice students in health care. Live demonstrations were conducted by Dr. Sushmitha Karkada, Mr. Shreenidhi PhD Scholar, Mrs. Pushpalatha Staff Nurse, and Mr. Shailesh in small groups on surgical wounds, ostomy care, and obstetrical wounds.
On the second day, Dr Vishal Shanbhag, Associate Professor, Critical Care Medicine KMC Manipal deliberated saying Critical care wound remains critical to ICU patients whereas Interprofessional focused assessment and care remains a major challenge globally. He took through rare cases of critical care wounds and evidenced-based care with a holistic approach.
Dr. Vimal Krishnan S, Associate Professor, Dept of Emergency Medicine, KMC Manipal, transformed the thoughts of students on multiple trauma live cases through the innovative cases he managed successfully in an emergency. He brought in live cases and students’ experiences of injuries and what management they improvised in those specific situations. Dr. Joseph Thomas, Associate Professor, Department of Plastic Surgery KMC Manipal, shared glimpses of Negative pressure positive wound therapy using his jugaad a non-conventional, frugal innovative approach to wound management. His innovative ideas and experience shared gave students new thoughts to feel and use innovative ideas for quality care with complete evidence.
Mrs. Satyavathi, Mr. Shailesh, Ms. Effienia, and Mr. Prasannakumara performed live demonstrations on LAD therapy, Burns wound care, and VAC therapy. A total of 65 participants took an active part in the IP simulation workshop.
