Report on School Health Awareness Program on Hand and Food Hygiene

On November 13, 2024, the Department of Community Health Nursing and students of seventh semester BSc Nursing of MCON conducted a health awareness session on hand and food hygiene at St. Lawrence Higher Primary School, Moodubelle, as part of the school health and wellness drive. The objective of the program was to give the fundamental information that the students to follow to stop the spread of diarrheal disease.

Under the direction of Mr. Vinish V, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Health Nursing, and under the leadership of Ms. Shravya Chacko, student leader, the group of 16 seventh semester BSc Nursing students carried out the program for the students and faculty of St. Lawrence Higher Primary School, Moodubelle.

Ms. Lysha and group led a solemn prayer song to start the program, and then Ms. Neha Sreekumar gave a heartfelt welcoming address. In her presidential address for the program, Mrs. Sunitha, Principal of St. Lawrence Higher Primary School in Moodubelle, commended the team for choosing the theme and emphasized the significance of hygiene in daily life. The team performed a skit about hand and food cleanliness. The importance of food and hand cleanliness in preserving a healthy lifestyle was highlighted in the skit. Ms. Angel Jossie and her group performed a brief, easy dance to show proper hand hygiene steps.

A small competition for the children was arranged to demonstrate the procedures of hand washing after teaching them the six principles of hand hygiene. The winner received a trophy, and the other participants received awards for their participation. Additionally, we arranged refreshments for the participants, and Ms. Lysha Dsouza concluded the programme with a vote of gratitude.

This program was successful in educating 100 school children and six schoolteachers on food and hand cleanliness. They can develop responsibility and positive habits by incorporating these activities into their daily lives. This will make their lives healthier and more productive, which will help them to achieve SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 4 (Quality education) and SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation).
